Reflection and Appreciation – Quotes

starry night photo

“When the sound and wholesome nature of man acts as an entirety, when he feels himself in the world as in a grand, beautiful, worthy, and worthwhile whole, when this harmonious comfort affords him a pure, untrammeled delight; then if the universe, if it could be sensible of itself, would shout for joy at having attained its goal and wonder at the pinnacle of its own essence and evolution. For what is served by all the expenditure of suns and planets and moons, of stars and Milky Ways, of comets and nebula, of worlds evolving and passing away, if at last a happy man does not involuntarily rejoice in his own existence.”

-Goethe

“Let the mind beware, that though the flesh be bugged, the circumstances of existence are pretty glorious.”

-Jack Kerouac

The Odd Transparency of Streams

When the Buddha left this world
he went to live with the fishes.
He taught them
in step by step instructions
how a little fish
is eaten by a bigger fish
and he by a bigger fish
and on and on
until there is this
one
large
nondual
fish.
And he is not hungry.

I discovered this one evening
when I became a star
in a black sea
of stars.
The light
became
unbearable.
I
was
swallowed
whole.
And I’m no longer hungry.

I looked on
as thousands of words
scattered before my feeding.
I dove to the reach of the light
and searched for those that flash silver and gold.
Suddenly,
in one moment,
I realized
I was
indeed
full.
