the imposter

it’s 1:20 in the morning
and i am suddenly awake
with the realization
that the glowing red numbers
of the clock are all that exist.
the awareness that comprehends
is no where to be found.
a look outside
reveals a silent street
dreaming trees
and the reflection
in the window of a man
an obvious imposter
claiming to me.

sitting on a warm rock

just after sunset…

trying to embrace loneliness

not enough for a sparrow

more than enough for the moon

…the near-empty birdbath

empty hands

should mean

an empty heart

…the hollow

of the crescent moon

cat sleeping

under a grand piano

…dreams of virtuosity

a crystal bowl

holds a ray of sun

until it blushes

calling the batters

the darkness is perfumed

with stars,

the trees and hills

radiate a slight breeze

that bows before the silence

a mussel shell
broken on a beach stone
…how light the rain

stationary, cupping his wings
the gull against the sea breeze
…turning…reversing direction
where stillness and motion

sitting on the beach
face wet from the mist
facing both sides of the infinity

the never-ending adventure
of the blue caterpillar
sipping the fermented spirits
on the other side

pulling the sheets
taute, across the slats of dreamware
dangerously, I join you
at a Parisian cafe
and you, smiling…

what you’ve grown from the earth
though impossible,
I love you
even more

though translucent dew
seeps into my canvas shoes,
even Van Gogh
cannot enrich
the depths of this color

picking notes
on an old guitar,
the charcoal clouds
with rain

ebb and flow of matter

I used to think
that it was the dark shadows
out there
that were carving me up,
leaving the ever-disappearing
remainder of matter to call myself.

It occurred to me recently
that it was the light
in me
that was expanding my definition
out of the surrounding dark matter.

It now occurs to me
after listening to my heart
expand and contract
over and over
that it just
doesn’t matter.

The Lie

Never trust a man in a blue trench coat…”    -Tom Waits

He was waiting outside the gate
in a trench coat and hat,
hands in his pockets.
He came to discuss
the terms of extortion: He tells you
that he will be moving into your master bedroom;
he needs the extra space.
He will be attending your pool party,
you are to introduce him to your friends as a your brother,
make up any name, he says.
He’s just come from his villa in…
you are to make that up too.

At first, you are able to ignore him.
You make casual small talk with your friends.
When he grabs your drink from your hand,
his robe opens, revealing a huge, hairy belly
with snake tattoos that seem to move;
some of your guests turn away in embarrassment  and disgust.
Others laugh nervously
and try to engage him.
He vulgarly insults men and women, alike.
When the tension rises to the breaking point
he pushes you into the pool, and laughs like a jackal.
All your guests start leaving.

As you dry off, he says “I think that went well.
Sit down and let’s plan our next soiree!”
